Adventure Begins at Your Library – Summer Reading Challenge 2024

We invite you to join us at each CCLD library branch this summer for our Summer Reading Challenge 2024. Our theme this year is Adventure Begins at Your Library.

Our adventure begins this year with a Summer Reading Challenge Kick-Off party at the Camdenton Library on Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 10 am to 2 pm. We will have crafts, and entertainment from Sparkie Da Clown, Babaloo, Lake of the Ozarks Blues Society, and Merry Mary face painting. Enjoy food from Not Just Any Place Cafe Food Truck. We will also have local craft vendors with booths set up where you can purchase unique gifts for yourself or someone special. Or get your picture taken with a mermaid!

Each library branch will have a table where you can sign up with the library you frequent the most. All ages are welcome to participate and earn chances to win one of our grand prizes. If you register for our 2024 Summer Reading Challenge on Saturday, June 1, 2024, you will get a chance to win one of our door prizes.

We encourage you to pick up a schedule of events to which performers will be visiting our libraries this summer, download a PDF version by clicking on the button, or visit our calendar of events page to save events to your calendar.

How to Participate:

  • Registration is open to all ages. When a child registers (birth – 18) they will get to pick out a book, while supplies last. When adults register (ages 19+) they can choose a can koozie or a carabiner keychain, while supplies last.
  • Registration for the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge – Adventure Begins at Your Library starts on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
  • At registration, each participant will receive a reading log to keep track of their reading.
  • Once you receive your reading log, please keep track of any reading you do from that point forward.
  • The last day to turn your reading logs in is Saturday, August 10, 2024.
  • We will draw our grand prize winners on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

How does the Summer Reading Challenge work?

  • For babies to age 5: we encourage you to read at least 40 books this summer. For every ten (10) books read and logged, you will earn a coupon for an area attraction, a ticket for our grand prize drawing, and a new reading log.
  • For ages 6 to 11, we encourage you to read at least 1,000 pages this summer. For every 250 pages read and logged, you will earn a coupon for an area attraction, a ticket for our grand prize drawing, and a new reading log.
  • For ages 12 to 18, we encourage you to read at least 2,000 pages this summer. For every 500 pages read and logged, you will earn a coupon for an area attraction, a ticket for our grand prize drawing, and a new reading log.
  • For ages 19+, we encourage you to read at least 4,000 pages this summer. For every 1,000 pages read and logged, you will earn a ticket for our grand prize drawing.

What counts for reading?

Reading in any format counts towards your reading goals. This can include eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, newspapers, etc. You could even include reading the back of the cereal box!

But to give everyone a little better idea of how to count what you read, please follow the following guidelines:

  • For a physical copy of a title, use the number of pages stated in the book. This goes for hardbound or paperbacks.
  • For audiobooks, use the number of pages stated in a physical copy of that book’s title. This can be the large print, hardbound, or paperback version of the title.
  • For eBooks, use the number of pages stated in a physical copy of that book’s title.
  • Large Print Books – record the number of pages in that particular book.
  • For newspapers, magazines, or graphic novels count the number of pages in that issue.
  • And if you choose to include the back of the cereal box? It counts as one page.

FAQs

Q: What if the ebook I am reading doesn’t have a physical copy?

A: If you use Amazon or Google to look up a title, they usually approximate how many pages are in the title.
